Halloween & La Castanyada for Families in Barcelona

Halloween in Barcelona has become increasingly popular with families, while La Castanyada remains an important Catalan autumn tradition. If you're looking for Halloween activities in Barcelona with kids, or want to experience a more traditional Catalan celebration, there are plenty of ways to enjoy both.
Here’s our guide to Halloween and La Castanyada in Barcelona in 2026, including family-friendly events, traditional foods, trick-or-treating, and other activities around the city.
A quick primer: La Castanyada vs Halloween
Halloween and La Castanyada take place at roughly the same time of year, but they have very different origins and traditions.
What is La Castanyada?
La Castanyada is a traditional Catalan celebration associated with October 31st and All Saints' Day, or Tots Sants, on November 1st. Traditionally, it is a time to remember deceased loved ones and enjoy seasonal foods including roasted chestnuts (castanyes), roasted sweet potatoes (moniatos), and panellets, small almond-based sweets.
During this time of year, you'll often see castanyeres selling roasted chestnuts and sweet potatoes from stalls around Barcelona. Bakeries and pastry shops also fill their displays with panellets in the days leading up to All Saints' Day.
What about Halloween?
Halloween is not a traditional Catalan holiday, but it has become increasingly popular in Barcelona, particularly among children and families. Costumes, pumpkin carving, themed events and trick-or-treating can all be found around the city.
Some neighborhoods and organizations have combined the two traditions into events known as Castaween, bringing together Halloween activities with elements of La Castanyada such as chestnuts and sweet potatoes.
In 2026, Halloween falls on Saturday, October 31, while All Saints' Day is Sunday, November 1.
